The recent Parallels conference at the National Gallery of Victoria was an exciting exploration into craft, design and contemporary making. Dessein was lucky enough to attend the two-day conference which attracted speakers from around the world and Australia.

Some of our all-time design luminaries were in attendance, including Gijs Bakker of Droog, as well as Dessein’s very own design collaborator, Jon Goulder. 

In his short talk on 17 September, Jon addressed the topic of “Adaptable species are the most resilient”, sharing his experiences and practice and how this informs the model he’s developed for the Furniture Studio Jam Factory Adelaide, where he currently is creative director.

Well-designed schools can help bring out the very best in students. We were thrilled to be involved in a recent project for Marcellin College in Bulleen, Victoria. It’s nice to think that our contribution can help improve educational outcomes!

Cox Architecture were engaged to reimagine many of the learning spaces at Marcellin and we worked closely with them to ensure the furniture complemented their overall design. Both the designers and the client were looking for transformative pieces that were fun, positive, versatile and robust.

Announcement coming in! Dessein's Concept Store is set to make its third star appearance in Perth on 1st August. Taking place in conjunction with our friends at Arthur G, the Perth Concept Store will open with an exclusive launch event at Arthur G, followed by industry focused breakfast seminars and competitions open to all.

The Concept Store, which gives our customers a physical, real-time interaction with the Dessein brand, was conceived and created by Melbourne studio, the DesignOffice.

A three-day celebration of Australian design can only be a good thing for the local design industry, and we’re pleased to report that the DEN fair served this up – and so much more!

DEN presented an important opportunity for local designers and suppliers like ourselves. The fair allowed for a wide range of design enthusiasts to engage directly with Australian suppliers and retailers, and revealed a rich seam of local creative talent that often gets passed over for overseas alternatives.

Entries for the first ever Australian Furniture Design Award are closing in a matter of weeks (on 22 May 2015). When those entries close, it will be time for the judging to kick in and designer Jon Goulder is going to be busy!

“As a judge I’m looking for original work – the more flamboyant and original the better for me. A good point to make is that the winning piece isn’t what goes into production, the winning piece is collected by the Art Gallery of South Australia and the winning designer comes to the Jam Factory in Adelaide to [develop and] design a collection.”
