The recent Parallels conference at the National Gallery of Victoria was an exciting exploration into craft, design and contemporary making. Dessein was lucky enough to attend the two-day conference which attracted speakers from around the world and Australia.
Some of our all-time design luminaries were in attendance, including Gijs Bakker of Droog, as well as Dessein’s very own design collaborator, Jon Goulder.
In his short talk on 17 September, Jon addressed the topic of “Adaptable species are the most resilient”, sharing his experiences and practice and how this informs the model he’s developed for the Furniture Studio Jam Factory Adelaide, where he currently is creative director.
Join us for 3 fabulous breakfast seminars covering off 3 of our favourite topics in design! Read on to find out more and book your place at these FREE talks, taking place at the Arthur G Perth showroom, 207 Stirling Hwy, Claremont.
Well-designed schools can help bring out the very best in students. We were thrilled to be involved in a recent project for Marcellin College in Bulleen, Victoria. It’s nice to think that our contribution can help improve educational outcomes!
Cox Architecture were engaged to reimagine many of the learning spaces at Marcellin and we worked closely with them to ensure the furniture complemented their overall design. Both the designers and the client were looking for transformative pieces that were fun, positive, versatile and robust.
Announcement coming in! Dessein's Concept Store is set to make its third star appearance in Perth on 1st August. Taking place in conjunction with our friends at Arthur G, the Perth Concept Store will open with an exclusive launch event at Arthur G, followed by industry focused breakfast seminars and competitions open to all.
The Concept Store, which gives our customers a physical, real-time interaction with the Dessein brand, was conceived and created by Melbourne studio, the DesignOffice.
Milan’s annual Salone del Mobile is the ultimate furniture fair that never fails to deliver. At Dessein, we love being part of the international design industry and are always excited by the innovative work on show. There were a few designs that were stand-outs for us this year – here’s our top 5 picks!
We are huge fans of the Japanese design aesthetic and we recently undertook a design tour of odyssey-like proportions. Our trip included visits to Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo, where refined minimalism and wacky futurism create fascinating contrasts.
Here’s our top 5 design, culture and dining destinations in Japan!
A three-day celebration of Australian design can only be a good thing for the local design industry, and we’re pleased to report that the DEN fair served this up – and so much more!
DEN presented an important opportunity for local designers and suppliers like ourselves. The fair allowed for a wide range of design enthusiasts to engage directly with Australian suppliers and retailers, and revealed a rich seam of local creative talent that often gets passed over for overseas alternatives.
We are extremely excited to be showing at DEN fair, 14 – 16 May. Not only will we have our newest Australian designed furniture items on show, but we are also bringing back the Dessein Concept Store.
This totally unique retail spatial installation, conceived and created by Melbourne studio, the DesignOffice, captures the essence of the Dessein brand while also presenting our product range in a highly experiential way.
Entries for the first ever Australian Furniture Design Award are closing in a matter of weeks (on 22 May 2015). When those entries close, it will be time for the judging to kick in and designer Jon Goulder is going to be busy!
“As a judge I’m looking for original work – the more flamboyant and original the better for me. A good point to make is that the winning piece isn’t what goes into production, the winning piece is collected by the Art Gallery of South Australia and the winning designer comes to the Jam Factory in Adelaide to [develop and] design a collection.”
At Dessein we're interested in all things design – especially when it's in Australia, and so we've spent the last fortnight exploring Perth's design scene, catching up on some of the city's great architecture, gallery shows and public art.
It’s light, casual, comfortable and you can really put it anywhere – at home or at the office – the Parawood Chair answers all those needs. Designed byAdam Goodrum, the Parawood is Dessein Furniture’s chair hero. It’s versatile and brings as much elegance to a home dining environment, as it brings contemporary edge to a restaurant, café or even work place.
We want to take this opportunity to congratulate Chris Hermann on winning our Easy Chair Naming Competition. The newly christened ‘Therry’ easy chair, designed by Jon Goulder for Dessein Furniture, holds a very special place in our hearts, as Dessein’s first limited edition and upholstered furniture piece.
‘Therry’, too, has special significance for us, named for Therry Street in Melbourne, where our first-ever Dessein Concept Store has been for the past 3 months.
Happy new year everyone! We hope you had a wonderful xmas and new year break. With January coming in to full swing we are extremely excited to share with you that our pop-upDessein Furniture Concept Store will remain open just a little bit longer!
The launch of our 10 Degrees campaign in October this year marked the introduction of 5 new furniture pieces to the Dessein range, including Dessein’s first-ever limited edition piece – an Easy Chair designed by Jon Goulder.
We sneak a few minutes with Greg Longhurst to get a few tips on leather for upholstery purposes. This is what he had to say:
Greg: Leather Italia is one of the only companies that specialises in European leather that conforms to [strict] environmental standards...
Have you visited Dessein Furniture’s new pop upConcept Store yet? It’s a truly experiential space, designed by the talented team at DesignOffice to bring our new campaign, ’10 Degrees’, to life.
